The Cocos Island Bird Guide is the first photographic field guide dedicated to the avifauna of this fascinating natural paradise, as well as to the oceanic waters of the Cocos Island Marine Conservation Area. Within its pages, readers will find a comprehensive ornithological characterization of the island, accompanied by a detailed focus on the 181 confirmed bird species that inhabit, visit, or occasionally appear in this remote and unique ecosystem.
This book not only provides an accurate description of each species but also explores their natural history, habits, and the main observation and study sites on the island. Additionally, the work is enriched with over 500 historical and reference photographs, serving as a tool for identifying the island’s resident, migratory, and accidental bird species.
The guide aims to promote birdwatching tourism and the study of birds in one of the country’s most remote regions. Sergio Arias, the lead author, stated that the new guide is a celebration of Cocos Island and its ornithological wealth, with contributions from dozens of researchers, birdwatching tourists, and staff from the Cocos Island Marine Conservation Area.
The production received support from the National Birdwatching Board and the Costa Rica Birding Network. The project took five years to complete and is available for purchase on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/9930000771) or by contacting +506 83589938.
