Visiting the whole hotspots will take between 2-3 weeks. However you can choose your favorite hotspots to visit with your target species and create your own itinerary to explore the route.

This is the recommended Super Birding Program, across the Route of the Costa Rica’s Birding Hotspots, to experience the very best of Costa Rica Birding. The target check list of the route is between 300-500 species by visiting all the locations.

Days 1 & 2: Arrival and departure to La Fortuna and Arenal for 2 nights at Arenal Observatory Lodge. Day 10 & 11: The legendary birding lodge Rancho Naturalista, the mecca for the Snowcap in Turrialba. Day 20 & 21: Rancho Humo Estancia in the Dry Forest and wetland ecosystems onf the North Pacific Palo Verde & Nicoya Gulf.
Day 3: Full day birding at El Toro Waterfall. Juan Castro Blanco & Poas Volcano hotspot. Day 12 & 13: Paraiso del Quetzal Lodge in Los Quetzales National Park, Talamanca highlands, the perfect place for the king of the birds: The Resplendent Quetzal. Day 21 & 22: Nicoya Peninsula, Tango Mar Hotel in the Quizales Beach, the perfect location for visiting Cabo Blanco & Curu.
Day 4 & 5: Departure to Braulio Carrillo & Sarapiqui Lowlands birding hotspots. Rainforest Adventures Nature Lodge will be your home for 2 nights to explore de area including a visit to La Selva Field Station and the Quebrada Gonzalez Rangers Station. Day 14 & 15: Esquinas Lodge in Piedras Blancas, South Pacific, home to the very special endemic Black-checked ant-tanager. Day 23 & 24: North Guanacaste, Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, Hacienda Guachipelín.
Day 6 & 7: Manatus Hotel in the heart of the famous Tortuguero National Park, North Caribbean of Costa Rica. Day 16 & 17: Cristal Ballena in the Ballena Marine National Park. Day 25: Departure.
Day 8 & 9: Selva Bananito, home to the Great jacamar and the South Caribbean birdfauna. Day 18 & 19: Macaw Lodge & Reserve in the Carara & Turrubares hills area, one of the birdwatching capitals of Costa Rica.
